1 Week in San Juan for First-Timers

Updated: Jan 22, 2023

Puerto Rico is becoming a top destination for many United States residents since you don’t need a passport to travel there. It is one of the biggest islands in the Caribbean and has so much to offer, making it ideal for a group of people with different hobbies, or for couples looking to explore. However, with so much to do, it can be hard to figure out what you need to experience during your first trip there.

Here’s how to spend 6 days in San Juan, on your first trip to Puerto Rico…

Day 1:

Arrive in San Juan and check into the beachfront San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. This property is located right next to shopping, restaurants, and just minutes from Old San Juan.

Day 2:

Stay at your resort and feel your stress melt away! Indulge in their delicious buffet restaurant, and enjoy the outdoor scenic pool with a swim-up bar, hot tub, and waterslide. Or, if you want to break a sweat, visit their wellness center and health club, or play a round of tennis at their tennis courts.

In the evening, dance and enjoy nighttime entertainment, drinks at the bar, or get your gambling on. Visit the resort's 11,000-square-foot casino, which offers a variety of slot machines and table games and is open 24 hours, so the fun never stops!

Day 3:

Take a private tour around Old San Juan's cobblestone streets, learn about the history of this unique city, and visit top sights such as the Saint John’s Cathedral and San Cristobal.

Then take the only true Distillery tour in Puerto Rico at the Barrilito Rum Distillery, home of the finest rum. There, you’ll learn the history of the distillery, the process of making the rum, and get to sample the finished product.

Day 4:

Take a food tour around Old San Juan. Stroll the streets of the city while taking in the fascinating architecture and sights. Get involved in the authentic food scene and indulge in Puerto Rico's must-eat cuisine like fresh ceviche, paletas, and the signature mofongo.

Day 5:

Enjoy another day at the resort for relaxation and fun, the possibilities are endless!

If you're feeling adventurous, experience Bioluminescent Kayaking in the evening! Take your kayak for a paddle around one of the five Bioluminescent Lagoons in the world, and watch the marine life light up below you.

Day 6:

Departure day has to be the worst day of any trip, you never want to leave! But end your trip on a high note, and make that final goodbye a bit easier by getting an Airport Lounge Pass. Relax and unwind away from the airport chaos in a private lounge, while you enjoy free food and drinks, WiFi, comfortable seating, and more.
