The Amalfi Coast is HOT right now, and we don’t just mean the temperature. Travelers of all kinds - honeymooners, adventurers, solo-trippers, families, celebrities, and more - from around the world have been flocking to this captivating coastal destination… and for good reason.
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most picturesque regions of Italy. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs, blue waters, and breathtaking sunsets, the impressive natural landscape creates an unforgettable backdrop to this seaside setting. With narrow, winding streets and medieval architecture, the Amalfi Coast is a must-see while visiting Italy.
In all its beauty, however, there are some important must-knows you should pay attention to before you vacation to this hot spot. Keep reading for do’s and don’ts of visiting the Amalfi Coast.
Do pack a good insect repellent.
Do greet the locals in Italian. Learn some basic phrases such as per favore (please), grazie (thank you), buongiorno (good day), buona sera (good evening), and arrivederci or arriverla (goodbye).
Do dress comfortably but nicely. Although tourists (and locals) tend to dress a little more casually during the day, with shorts and tank tops perfectly acceptable in the summer months, the evenings tend to be a dressier occasion.
Do keep an eye out for pebbles on the beach with a hole all the way through them. The locals believe finding one brings good luck.
Do explore the entire coast. Each area has its own special and unique experiences.
Do try one of the regional specialties; Seafood is a highlight of the local fare - Freshly caught fish, gamberi (shrimp), and alici (anchovies) are featured favorites. Lemon specialities such as risotto al limone (risotto with lemon), a glass of limoncello, or lemon cake are also musts.
Don't bring high heel shoes. Take sturdy walking shoes. The towns are built on vertical inclines, with many narrow paths and walkways, flights of steep stairs, and spectacular hiking trails above the city.*
*Pro Tip: Good walking shoes are essential, and the best way to stay safe while hiking is to stick to the paths mapped out in red and white stripes by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club). Water shoes are also a good idea for swimming; the pebbly beaches can be difficult for sensitive feet and there can be jagged rocks in the water.
Don’t forget to cover up when visiting any churches or cathedrals. Bare shoulders and short shorts generally are frowned upon in places of worship.
