Eiffel Tower? Or "Hideous Lamppost"?

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

Everyone around the world - young, old, near, far - knows the Eiffel Tower. Recognized as one of the world’s most popular landmarks, visitors flock to the Eiffel Tower for picnics, romance, inspiration, and once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing. But what many do not know is that when the Eiffel Tower was first built, it offended many local and prominent Parisians. Originally built as a centerpiece in 1889 for the World’s Fair, locals dubbed it a “hideous lamp post” because they felt it hindered the city’s aesthetics.

However, the structure prevailed, and especially after its radio tower capabilities were discovered, it remained intact and became a symbol of Paris which is well-known today. Many visitors choose to enjoy the landmark from below with a picnic of champagne and cheese, or a blanket and a book, but the views from its three levels are extraordinary and worth the wait in line!

At night, the tower shimmers and sparkles for five minutes every hour on the hour, and is best enjoyed from afar at a Parisian rooftop or bistro.
