Greece's Greatest Island: Crete

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

If you are looking to experience all that Greece has to offer without the crowds and without spending half your time on ferries island-hopping, Crete is for you.

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and home to endless sights, activities, food, wine, landscapes, and more. From beautiful beaches to ancient ruins, quaint villages, and coastal towns, Crete is the perfect destination for a Grecian adventure.

Check out our recommended itinerary in Crete, and start planning your trip today!

Day 1—Arrive in Heraklion, Crete’s administrative capital and home to the Palace of Knossos. Tour the city and get your bearings.

Day 2—In the morning, tour the Palace at Knossos, a centuries-old ancient Minoan archaeological site. Visit Iraklion's Archaeological Museum in the afternoon.

Day 3—Drive west along the northern coast to Chania, known for its Venetian harbor, and stop in Rethymnon along the way.

Day 4—If you feel up to it, hike the 11-mi/18-km Samaria Gorge - a challenge! For something less strenuous, spend the day in Chania exploring all this coastal town has to offer.

Day 5—Drive to Matala on the southern coast. From there see Festos, a Bronze Age archaeological site, or Agia Triada - the “Holy Trinity”, or just hang out on the beach!

Day 6—Explore the Lassithi Plateau, the center of Minoan civilization, and believed to be the birthplace of the Olympic God, Zeus. Spend the night in Agios Nikolaos or a smaller coastal town.

Day 7—Depart Heraklion. If you have more time and want to see the Macedonian region of Greece, extend your trip by several nights to see the Thessaloniki and Pella areas!
