The German Castle That Inspired "Cinderella"

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

Despite what some may think, Cinderella’s Castle in Disney World is not quite the original castle of the famed princess! Nestled in Bavaria between Munich, Liechtenstein, and Innsbruck, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the fantastical castles built or partially built by King Ludwig II, and is said to be the inspiration for the well-known castle of Cinderella. A visit to the castle is a visit to a fairytale.

Originally commissioned by the King as a retreat, the castle now operates year-round tours of the grounds and the castle. Because of its popularity, you can expect crowds and long lines, especially in the summer months (tickets are sometimes sold out by noon during this period) but the visit is worth it!

When visiting, you can expect a decent walk up a fairly steep hill, so wear good walking shoes - OR, you can opt for the full fairytale experience and take a horse-drawn carriage! Accommodations can also be made for those in wheelchairs. Before or after your visit, you may also choose to explore Hohenschwangau village, which is in close proximity to the castle and located on a picturesque lake.
